In this video, Julia defines what “honed” means when it comes to a counter top. In this example, she uses travertine. Because this is a natural stone, it has pits in it. Honing simply means that they fill in those pits with a filler and then sand it over to make it smooth. This is totally normal with natural stone. There may also be a difference in the sealer that is used. Some are a glossy finish and others are a matte finish. Travertine is one of those stones that requires more maintenance and should be sealed more often than say granite. If your top happened to have a matte finish and you want to go with more of a glossy, this is an easy DIY project where you can just go to your local hardware store and get the glossy finish sealer.
