Plumbers’ Emergency Kit

wrenches

Everyone needs a plumbers’ emergency kit whether they’re a pro or not.  Plumbing issues always come up unexpectedly, so it’s a good idea to be ready for even the toughest jobs. Here’s a list of items that will be needed for anyone who’s getting ready to do some plumbing work. There’s also a comprehensive guide on how to handle any situation.

Things to keep in mind about plumbing:

* Know the location of the main water shut-off valve.

* Know where the water heater switch is, for gas water heaters; know the position of the switch labeled “pilot”.

* To help loosen collar nuts, try a pair of slip joint pliers; use them on the drain line.

* Turn two wrenches at the same time in one direction and turn the other wrench opposite, the name of this technique is “backing off”, and stress can go to the wrench verses the plumbing.

* For a temporary fix, use duct tape to seal up cracked pipe. This will reduce the leak until it can be completely fixed.

* Toilets get clogged easily use a plunger, cup style for full force.

* Bathtub clogs can be removed. Unscrew the cap, this will open up the drain. Use the plunger to plug the water flow and push to loosen clog, do until clog is released.

* Many isolation valves are found at the fixture. They stop water at the source while allowing water to flow to other fixtures within the home or building. Test them each year to ensure they are in good condition.

Emergency Plumbing Kit-

Bucket: Works great for holding tools and can hold water from where the leak or water burst is located. Flip the bucket over to be used as a seat or you can hang items over the side.

Plunger: Always keep a regular plunger and forced cup handy.

Wrenches: These are a must have, all sizes are needed including an adjustable wrench.

Allen Wrench: You’ll need all sizes available; they work great on disposals and faucets.

Rags: Keep a roll of paper towels along with heavy-duty towels on hand. Old cloth or rags are great when used for cleaning up leaks and water spills.

Blind Caps: These come in a variety of sizes and work great to fix broken valves.

Duct Tape: Tape can be used to fix pipes temporarily.

Teflon Tape: This seals up the pipe threads to stop leaks.
