Symmetrically Balanced Kitchen

Phoebe from Southern Living goes over the kitchen in their design ideas home in Nashville and tells about the different aspects of it that makes it a very useful and inviting kitchen. Lighting is very important in a kitchen and you should think about using dimmers. I thought that was a great idea when she mentioned that all the lights in there were on dimmers. She gives a few useful tips on kitchen design. The best that I liked is if you have an island, make sure you have chairs for people to sit especially if you are hosting. The cook does not like to feel left out of the conversations. My kitchen is closed off and I can see what she means.

These barn doors that lead from the living room into the kitchen really set the tone for the kitchen itself. There are so dramatic and they’re so great looking and they’re also so functional because you can easily close them and have the kitchen not be part of the space, but you can open them and have this great open living space that many people today desire.

My whole concept in here believe it or not began with the fact that I wanted to use white porcelain knobs so we have the white knobs against the dark cabinets. We’ve used this really deep, dark, sagey green for the cabinets in here. And then we used solid slab marble as the back splash and the counters. But then on the island, we used a wood counter top.

This island is great. It houses a lot. It has the beautiful triple sink with those great looking Calista faucets on it which are so sleek. And then we have 2 dishwashers. And we have 2 trash cans slinking that. And then we have this beautiful microwave with a cook book shelf below. On the other end of the island, there are 2 additional shelves that can house cook books. Then you have the 3 bar stools because I think you should always be able to sit in the kitchen and talk to the cook while they’re cooking so they’re not isolated.

Then one of my favorite features in this kitchen are the two big pendants hanging over the island. They just give off such good light. I think they’re just really a winner. It’s also important in a kitchen to have multiple light sources so we have recessed lights which light the space between the island and the counters. And everything is on a dimmer.

All the appliances in the kitchen have wood cabinet fronts so they are seamless and part of the cabinetry. So it gives this kitchen just a great feeling and it’s all unified and all this beautiful dark green color.

So I buy these quirky things from time to time and they sit around my warehouse and I looked over and I saw this great wooden boat. I don’t even remember where I bought it, but I looked at it and I’m like “You come with me, we’re going to Nashville”.
The kitchen in this house is a great room as it should be. It is the heart of every home.
